Baru Nut
The Sustainable Superfood from the Brazilian Savanna
ABOUT
THE
BARU NUT
The Baru tree (Dipteryx alata) is a fruit-bearing species native to the Cerrado - the Brazilian Savanna. It produces a nut with many nutrients and a distinguished flavor. The nut is rich in protein, fiber, magnesium, potassium, and iron, and with a high energy value, baru oil is highly unsaturated. The processing of baru nuts takes place in community agro-industries guided by qualified professional technicians who follow best handeling practices. These, combined with appropriate production structures, ensure the product's sanitary quality.

The baru nut stands out for its exceptional nutritional characteristics. A superfood naturally rich in vegetable protein, fiber, healthy fats, and essential minerals that responds to the growing demand for nutritious, sustainable, and functional foods.

The harvesting of baru nuts follows practices that allow for the identification
of the extractive worker, the region, and the date the nuts were harvested.
Ensuring quality and sustainability from the source, COPABASE's
baru nuts hold national and international certifications.
The certifications we have earned are not just seals on a label: they are living proof of a robust protocol that COPABASE has been building with care, transparency, and commitment to the future of the Cerrado - the Brazilian Savanna.
We follow a protocol of good practices for the collection, storage, and processing of baru that meet the requirements of the market for natural products: traceability, food safety, quality standards, and proven social impact. Each step is designed to deliver a premium, ethical, and sustainable product.
The fruit is harvested only in our own or authorized areas, using only fruit that has fallen to the ground, selected one by one, and always leaving some in nature to ensure the ecosystem's regeneration. Storage is carried out in clean, covered, and ventilated environments, following strict criteria that preserve flavor, texture, and nutritional properties.
By choosing COPABASE baru, international buyers get much more than an exotic and tasty nut from the Cerrado: they strengthen cooperatives, generate income for family farmers, support women and young people in rural areas, and promote socio-environmental public policies.
We offer organization, security, and transparency throughout the chain—from tree to shipment. For brands, distributors, and manufacturers, COPABASE baru is the ideal combination of superior quality, authentic history, and real positive impact.

Recognized as a Slow Food Presidia
the baru nut symbolizes the protection of a food from a threatened biome, the Brazilian Savanna - the Cerrado. It is harvested by extractive families who respect the cycles of nature and the biodiversity of the Savanna. More than just an ingredient, the baru preserves landscapes, traditional knowledge, and ways of life, strengthening the local economy and reaffirming the commitment to fair, clean, and sustainable production in the Urucuia Grande Sertão territory.

WHO PRODUCES
THE BARU NUT?
Our commitment extends beyond trade, encompassing environmental protection, fair income generation, cultural appreciation, and the building of long-term partnerships to build resilient, transparent supply chains.
Baru nuts are processed by the Regional Cooperative for Family Farming and Extractive Activities (COPABASE), founded in 2008 in the municipality of Arinos, in the Urucuia River Valley region, in the northwest of the state of Minas Gerais.
Copabase promotes sustainable regional development and the conservation of the Brazilian Cerrado, organizing and empowering family farmers and extractivists through the management, processing, and commercialization of baru nuts. More than 446 families are involved in harvesting baru, preserving an estimated 8,000 native trees from the Brazilian Savanna.
We are certified by Produto Orgânico Brasil and USDA
Organic, and we are open to pursuing additional certifications
that align with the interests of extractivists and customer demands.
